Performing shows is all about entertaining. Entertaining means you take people on an emotional journey. As a professional mentalist and hypnotist, the lens through which I see political communication is unique. Here are some insights for you to consider yourself.
All human decisions are made based on emotion justified secondarily by intellect. This is true even in a scientist (Sheldon, Big Bang Theory is a great example).
Your mind is the real estate that politicians desire to own and control. That control is done through using urgency, threats and implied solutions to play on your emotional and ego responses.
The first way your perception is controlled is that usually there is a choice between only two platforms or candidates. Real life often has infinite choices. Therefore, the limitation of the perceived choices is one way to hypnotize the public. Democrat/Republican, Conservative, Liberal – then all they have to do is give you a third choice instead of looking at reality, and your mind is responding to the system they have suggested.
The second way they control the situation in your mind is to always present a crisis, then blame it on the other side. Your mind is designed to pay attention to crisis to solve issues of survival, when they get you to believe it is caused by the competition your loyalty is installed. This concept is called esprit de corps. That feeling is caused by two people or groups having a common enemy. The illogic goes “My enemy’s enemy is my friend.”
Another mechanism to control your perception is to get you caught up in the outcome rather than the solution. How things are done only matters if those actions are tied to an outcome. One political maneuver is to make the population get concerned with the method and forget the outcomes.
Emotionally, the political consultant is savvy at manipulating your fear and your self interest. They play on guilt, pain, loss, greed, exclusivity and gain. It’s not that hard to flatter the ego or tweak the fear.
Because those who desire to lead or rule have a serious mental issue, using greed to enlarge or perfect their jurisdiction, it is difficult to push back on the regulation creep that exists in this world.
Those who need the government to replace a parent in their head see no issue with mission creep. Those desiring freedom are made incensed by the tendency.
